Work Causes The Most Stress In People’s Lives, A Survey Reveals

Work is the main cause for stress with financial debt or one’s physical health proving to be less worrying, reveals a survey.

Putting things in perspective, Paul Farmer, the CEO of Mind, the organization that authorized the survey, said, ‘Work related mental health problems are an issue too important for businesses to ignore. Our research shows that employees are still experiencing high levels of stress at work, which is negatively impacting their physical and mental health. We know that right now, one in six workers is experiencing depression, stress or anxiety and yet our survey tells us that most managers don’t feel they have had enough training or guidance to support them.’

Conducted amongst almost 2000 people, 34 percent of the participants said their work life twas very stressful while debt (30 percent) and poor health (17 percent) were also attributed to be causes of stress as well.

Yet what’s alarming is that workplace stress has risen by 10 percent in 18 to 24 year olds and almost 7 percent of them suffer from suicidal thought while one in five have to cope with anxiety attacks.

To make matters worse is that this causes many people to resort to drugs and alcohol with almost 57 percent saying they drink after work while others drink during the workday to combat stress. What the survey also revealed that most managers who took the survey feel that they do not have the required guidance or training to support them.

These respondents also said that options such as flexible work timings as well as generous leave were ways by which companies could alleviate stress and improve their mental wellbeing.
