Foods on a Gluten Free Diet

Although it may seem like you don’t have a variety of what you can eat on a gluten free diet, there is actually a lot you can still have.  Many healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables are already naturally gluten free.  The following is gluten free:

  • Seeds, natural nuts, and beans, as long as it’s all unprocessed
  • Fresh eggs
  • Fresh poultry and fish, fresh meats, as long as nothing are breaded or have batter.
  • Vegetables and fruits
  • The majority of dairy products

When trying to stay away from gluten, it’s wise to make sure the food isn’t processed or mixed with grains that contain gluten, preservatives, or additives.  There are many starches and grains that can be consumed on a gluten free diet.

  • Arrowroot
  • Amaranth
  • Corn and cornmeal
  • Buckwheat
  • Hominy
  • Quinoa
  • Flax
  • Millet
  • Gluten free flours (soy, rice, bean, potato, and corn)
  • Soy
  • Sorghum
  • Rice
  • Teff
  • Tapioca

The foods that should be avoided

  • Rye
  • Barley (malt flavoring, malt vinegar)
  • Wheat
  • Rye
  • Triticale (cross between rye and wheat)
  • Farina
  • Kamut
  • Bulgur
  • Graham flour
  • Durum flour
  • Spelt
  • Semolina

Don’t consume unless stated ‘gluten free’

When following a strict gluten free diet, foods shouldn’t be consumed unless they are labeled as gluten free.  Also, you can consume if they are labeled as made with rice, corn, soy, or any other gluten free ingredients.

It’s important to watch and read what you are eating.  The small amount of gluten can really make a huge difference in the way you feel.
